As a native of Kenya, I learned English in elementary school and spent many other hours helping my mother on our small-scale farm. We grew maize, Napier grass, passion fruits, and kept cows, sheep, and chickens. of about 15 acres. But I had great ambitions of becoming an engineer and athlete.

My mother encouraged me to work harder in life to change my future. She valued hard work that motivated me. In February 2017, I immigrated to the USA to join my father. It was difficult adapting to the change in climate. But my biggest obstacle was the computer, in which I had absolutely no skills.

When I enrolled at Alamance Community College, I had difficulty in my drafting class until I was directed to a tutor in the campus skills lab. I learned basic computer skills through practical projects. As a result of being helped, I went from a failing grade in drafting to an A at semester’s end. Now I have a GPA of 4.0. I am working toward a fall 2019 degree in Mechatronics Engineering Technology. Learning skills in electronic, and mechanical and computer engineering, my goal is to find a job opportunity in the automation industry.
